Immune system development is influenced by microbial components over one’s entire lifespan. The consumption of ultra-processed food increases gut inflammation and deprives gut microbes of plant fiber and critical metabolic enzymes. Adults and children who consume the typical Western diet have experienced an unhealthy diminution in the diversity of their gut microbes, resulting in an increase in chronic inflammatory diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, obesity, allergies and asthma.
