Camp Katan

12 months to Pre-K

Camp Katan is all about filling six weeks of summer days with exciting activities, friends and fun. We offer small groups, dedicated and caring professional staff, and varied enrichment activities. We encourage the campers to grow and have fun while making them feel safe and protected in an age-appropriate facility located in the heart of South Charlotte.

Camp Katan has been suspended for Summer 2020

This decision has been made in concert with the Leadership of the Charlotte Jewish Preschool. Brooke Amo, CJP Executive Director and Peter Blair, LJCC CEO, have been in constant dialogue about the interconnectedness of these two programs for nearly all of our families. We recognize the importance of early childhood education and care for our families and look forward to resuming operations as soon as it is healthy and safe to do so. While these programs are interlinked in many ways, they also operate differently in some respects. Therefore, what is possible in Camp may not be possible in CJP and the converse may also be the case in certain instances.

While considering every possible option for Camp Katan this summer, we ultimately couldn’t ignore that if we moved forward with camp, once we had implemented the necessary changes and restrictions, Camp Katan would no longer feel like Camp Katan. In reviewing the guidance provided by the American Camp Association and the CDC, there are many structural changes that would have had to be made that would change the very nature of a summer at Camp Katan. The guidance states that two of the key methods of mitigating the spread of COVID 19, social distancing and the wearing of face masks, are not a developmentally appropriate expectation for any child under the age of 12, and especially the younger children we serve in Camp Katan. Therefore, as we worked to determine the likely frequency at which we could reasonably expect that your child would be at a distance of less than 6 feet of another child, neither of whom would be in a mask, we did not feel that we could meet the CDC Guidelines for our Camp Katan program.

This was not an easy decision. But we know it’s the right decision for Camp Katan after considering the specific needs of our community and reflecting on our Jewish Values.

In the coming days we will begin to process Camp Katan full refunds. Depending upon your payment method, it could take up to 3 weeks to receive your refund. If you have multiple children signed up for a Summer Camp program we are operating and have a remaining balance, the Camp Katan funds will be used to pay off your remaining balance. Please remember, you can check your Camp Minder account to view all billing information.
