40 Faces of the J
I’ve been part of the Levine JCC for as long as I can remember. Back in middle school and high school, I played basketball here, and I used to plan my entire month around Jammin’ at the J. If you were there, you probably could have found me right in the middle of the dance floor showing off new dance move.
As I’ve gotten older, the J has become something different, but just as important. It has always been a place where I can come to better myself. Whether I’m working out, relaxing in the sauna, stretching after a long day, or simply stopping in because I have some free time, the J has become my reset button. No matter what’s going on in my life, I always feel better when I walk through those doors.
What makes that possible is the people. I've always felt comfortable here. The staff has always been welcoming, and over the years I've met so many genuinely kind people. The Levine JCC has never felt like just another gym or fitness center. It feels like a place where people truly care about one another.
One of my favorite memories at the J is actually where my wife and I first connected. Before we started dating, I'd walk by while she was teaching Zumba, and she'd always wave at me. We still laugh about it today. That little wave gave me more energy than any pre-workout ever could.
When I think about what Community means, that's exactly what comes to mind. It's the feeling that you're welcomed, noticed, and valued every time you walk in. You're not just another membership number. You feel like people genuinely want you to be the best version of yourself.
As the Levine JCC celebrates 40 years and looks toward the future, my hope is simple. Keep doing what you're doing. In my opinion, it's the best facility in town, and it's not even close.
If I had to describe the Levine JCC in one word, it would be inviting. From the moment you walk through the doors, you know you belong.
