"Camp Soar isn't just a camp. It's a place where friendship, acceptance, and community come to life."

Erin's Story:

When people ask what the Levine JCC means to our family, the answer is simple. It has been part of our lives for many years and has given us a place where we feel welcomed, supported, and connected.

We first became members because we live nearby, but we stayed because of the people. The J has always felt like a place where everyone belongs. It's where our family comes to stay healthy, spend time together, and build friendships that have lasted for years.

For me, Camp Soar has become one of the most important parts of every year. More than 20 years ago, Bob Bowler introduced me to Camp Soar through Special Olympics, and it changed my life. What started as being a camper eventually became an opportunity to volunteer and give back to others. Every summer I look forward to seeing lifelong friends, meeting new people, and reconnecting with staff members who have become like family. Those relationships are what make Camp Soar so special.

One of my favorite memories was celebrating Camp Soar's 25th anniversary and honoring Bob Bowler. Even though Bob is no longer with us, seeing his legacy continue through Camp Soar reminds me how much this community cares about every person who walks through its doors.

The J has also given our family opportunities beyond Camp Soar. We use the fitness center to stay active, I practice basketball with my Special Olympics teammates on the J's courts, and we spend time together at the outdoor pool. The J isn't just somewhere we visit. It's woven into our everyday lives.

Michael's Story:

As Erin's father, watching the J's commitment to individuals with disabilities has meant more than I can put into words. Camp Soar reflects everything the J stands for by creating a place where people experience joy, acceptance, and a true sense of belonging. Knowing that our community invests both its heart and its resources into making that possible has always meant so much to our family.

The J has even become part of my own story. After retiring, I was given the opportunity to serve as a bus driver in the After School Program. It has introduced me to wonderful coworkers, meaningful new experiences, and another way to give back to a community that has given so much to us. It truly is an honor to be part of the Levine JCC family.

As we look ahead, our hope is that the Levine JCC continues to strengthen its commitment to serving the entire community. Whether through wellness, education, youth programs, or opportunities for individuals with special needs, the J has always been a place where people are welcomed, valued, and encouraged to thrive. We hope that spirit continues for generations to come.
