Members for 40 Years
“We’ve grown with the J for 40 years, and it has grown right alongside our family.”

I am a native to Charlotte and was living here when the JCC was planned and built.  In fact, Morey and I were in our early 30’s and our son David was four years old.  The excitement was real and we have been members for 40 years.  Our son went to camp Mindy as a camper and as a counselor.

We spent many summers at the JCC pool with our 3 grandsons. Swimming and lunch at the JCafé were our activity most summer Sundays.  We have always been active and enjoyed all the J has to offer. The offerings have grown tremendously over the years.

The JCC has played a big part in our lives. We are at the J for exercise to watch our son and now grandsons play basketball. I am there at least once a day and sometimes twice at least four times a week.  It is my go-to place and where I start my day.  Being a morning person I enjoy all the morning classes.  I love to see my friends and family there and enjoy the comradery with the instructors and all the staff in different departments. The JCC is a draw and it has met my needs as I have moved through different stages of my life.  Everything at the JCC has grown and improved through time.

My personal passion is exercising to stay young and healthy There is nothing better than to feel strong and fit.  Three years ago, I began volunteering with Rock Steady, The National boxing and fitness program for individuals with Parkinsons. My professional career was spent as an Occupational Therapist in hospitals and Rehabilitations Centers.  My husband signed me up to volunteer as he knew this was a perfect fit for my skill set and love of working with people.  Currently I volunteer two afternoons a week, and Monday and Wednesday afternoons are my favorite times of the week.

The staff who manage the program are outstanding.  The 15 – 20 clients attending each session are a true inspiration. I enjoy helping them with their balance, agility, and coordination. The participants are so motivated to maintain their independence and strengthen their bodies to help fight this disease. This program is a support and community for the participants.  Interacting, motivating, and encouraging their efforts is a pure joy for me. Being a volunteer at the J helps me to stay grounded and keep my priorities intact. Rock Steady is a program offered and utilized by the Jewish and broader Charlotte Community. It is an important niche for the J and connects us to many people and medical professionals.

I think the JCC is welcoming and cares about its members.  I love to be in a place where people say hello every morning and know your name. We are all part of multiple communities. My life is enriched by being part of the JCC community.

I think the founders of Shalom Park and the JCC would be so proud if they could see how far the JCC has evolved in 40 years. There is something meaningful offered to every age group.
